The Subtle Pull: Why Spiritual Drift Never Feels Like a Big Decision

19 August 2026The Drift · 1 of 3

In 2018, an abandoned cargo ship drifted 2,300 miles across the open ocean for 497 days before wrecking on the rocks of Ireland. It never intended to end up there — it simply lost its captain and stopped fighting the current. Pastor Matty George opens our new series, The Drift, by asking a hard question: does your life have a captain?

  1. The Wrong Path (Judges 14:1)

Samson went to Timna — a place God never sent him. Compromise begins the moment we stop anchoring to God’s Word and start floating with cultural currents, walking into environments where our boundaries will be tested before we ever “sin.”

1

The Wrong Focus (Judges 14:1–2; James 1:14–15)

Because Samson was in the wrong place, he saw the wrong thing — and what he saw, he wanted. Wrong environments produce wrong desires, and desire, left unchecked, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully grown, gives birth to death.

2

The Wrong Voice (Judges 14:3; Deuteronomy 7:1,3–4; Joshua 23:12–13; 2 Corinthians 6:14–16a)

Samson’s parents gave him godly counsel — and he rejected it. Scripture is direct about believers pairing their lives with unbelievers: “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 6:14). The question every one of us has to answer is simple: which voice will I listen to — my flesh, or godly counsel?

3

The Wrong Interpretation (Judges 14:4; 2 Timothy 2:20–21)

God still used Samson’s story for His purposes — but that was never approval of Samson’s sin. Do not misinterpret God’s patience for approval. He wants to use you for special purposes, not just common ones — but that requires a clean vessel.

Key Scripture References

  • Hebrews 2:1 — “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.”
  • Judges 14:1–4 — Samson demands a Philistine wife against his parents’ godly counsel.
  • James 1:14–15 — “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.”
  • 2 Corinthians 6:14 — “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.”
  • 2 Timothy 2:20–21 — vessels for special purposes vs. common use.
