Feeding The Drift: What Samson’s Story Teaches Us About Compromise

23 August 2026The Drift · 2 of 3

A cargo ship drifted for months before it ever wrecked — and marine records show the real drift started years earlier. In Part 2 of The Drift, let’s walk through Samson’s story in Judges 14 to show how compromise, once fed, always asks for more.

1

The Pull of the Undercurrent

Samson returns to Timnah — this time turning aside toward a vineyard he, as a Nazirite, had no business near (Numbers 6:3). Pastor Matty points out that every return trip to a place of compromise gets easier than the last: “The undercurrent of compromise grows stronger the more you feed it.” A young lion meets him there, a picture of the enemy 1 Peter 5:8 describes as “a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

2

The Power to Counter the Undercurrent

The Spirit of the Lord comes powerfully on Samson and he tears the lion apart (Judges 14:6-7). But the sermon’s turn is this: the same power that let Samson overcome the enemy publicly was available to help him turn around privately — and he didn’t use it that way. “Do not mistake God’s faithfulness as an endorsement of your unfaithfulness.” Power and character are not the same thing.

The Sweetness in the Carcass

Later, Samson turns aside again — this time to a dead lion’s carcass, which as a Nazirite he was also forbidden to touch (Numbers 6:6). He finds honey inside and eats it, telling no one where it came from. The message: the enemy rarely tempts with something ugly. He hides temptation inside something sweet, because “he can’t create — he just steals from God.”

  1. The Whirlpool of the Wake

Samson’s private compromise becomes public consequence — a prideful riddle, a manipulated bride, betrayal, and a violent, grief-soaked aftermath (Judges 14:14-20). Galatians 6:8 sums up the trajectory of the whole chapter: “Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction.”
