Marriage is not merely a social contract or a pursuit of personal happiness; it is a divine assignment to reenact the Gospel. In “The Marriage Dance,” the relationship between a husband and wife is presented as a “mission” and an “evangelism tool” designed to reflect the sacrificial love of Christ for His Church. To perform this dance successfully, couples must follow the steps choreographed by God, the Master Choreographer, rather than adhering to cultural or personal agendas.
The foundation of the marriage dance is mutual submission out of reverence for Christ. Historically, the Roman culture of the first century was rigidly hierarchical and oppressive to women. Against this backdrop, Paul’s instructions were radical and life-giving. He called all believers—regardless of status—to a “Kingdom culture” defined by selfless commitment to the well-being of others. In this divine dance, male and female are co-equal in value, both made in the image of God, yet they fulfill distinct, complementary roles to bring that image to life.
Wives are called to follow in submission and respect. This role does not imply inferiority; rather, it mimics Jesus, who, while co-equal with the Father, submitted to His will to accomplish the mission of salvation. Submission is a voluntary act of placing a husband’s leadership first, provided that leadership aligns with the Word of God. Wives act as the Ezer —a Hebrew term for “helper” that denotes a divine source of strength and support, the same word used to describe God as our help.
Husbands are called to lead through sacrificial love. Headship is defined not as “lordship” or control, but as being the source of provision, spiritual guidance, and protection. Just as Christ gave Himself up to make the Church holy, husbands are commanded to die daily to their own interests to prioritize the needs of their wives. A godly husband is a prayerful man who initiates romance, affirms his wife’s value, and takes responsibility for the spiritual health of his home. When both partners embrace these God-ordained steps, the marriage becomes a powerful testimony that draws the world to the Choreographer.
