Relationships are a “divine dance,” and in the kingdom of God, this dance is choreographed by the Holy Spirit. While marriage is the primary focus of this message, the principles of coordination, rhythm, and timing apply to all human interactions—whether with friends, co-workers, or family. The foundation of every healthy relationship is the greatest commandment: to love God with all our heart and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
A profound mystery lies at the heart of marriage: it was never created to be an end in itself or a mere source of personal gratification. Instead, marriage is a divine image designed to reflect the eternal covenant between Christ and the church. Just as an ultrasound provides a tangible yet incomplete picture of a baby before they are met face-to-face, marriage is a “shadow” or a “copy” that points to a higher reality. Because it is an image, marriage is not eternal; Jesus clarified that in the resurrection, people neither marry nor are given in marriage (Matthew 22:30).
Understanding the nature of this mystery protects us from two dangerous extremes fueled by “deceiving spirits”:
- Despising the Image: Society often dismisses marriage as an outdated institution or a trap. Some live in “coexistence” without commitment, following the lie that the body is separate from the spirit. However, the Bible commands that marriage be honored by all and the marriage bed be kept pure (Hebrews 13:4).
- Idolizing the Image: Overvaluing romantic love leads to the false belief that a spouse can “complete” us or provide ultimate significance. When marriage becomes the goal of faith rather than a means to glorify God, it becomes an idol. Emptiness cannot be solved by a partner; it is exposed by them. Only Jesus provides true fulfillment.
The true significance of life is found in the eternal family of God rather than biological ties alone. We are called to be “eternal disciples” and to grow the family of Christ through the Great Commission. The goal of the “love dance” is to maintain a healthy tension: honoring the beauty of earthly relationships while keeping our ultimate devotion fixed on the Groom, Jesus Christ, who is returning for His bride.
