The Forgiveness Roof

30 September 2026Brick by Brick · 4 of 5

In September 2026, a sudden torrential downpour hit Florence, Italy, overwhelming the drainage system of the famous Uffizi Gallery—home to priceless Renaissance masterworks by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Caravaggio. As water leaked through the roof and streamed down gallery walls near Caravaggio’s Bacchus , curators rushed to evacuate masterworks to prevent irreversible damage.

In our relationships, you can have a solid foundation of commitment, sturdy walls held together by the mortar of humility, and an exquisite framework of communication—but if your roof leaks, the storms of anger, hurt, and bitterness will breach your home and rot everything inside. Unforgiveness is a leaky roof. To protect the treasures God has placed within our homes, marriages, and church community, we must build and maintain the roof of biblical forgiveness.

1

What Forgiveness Is (and Is Not)

Many people resist forgiving because they misunderstand what scripture actually commands.

  • Misconceptions Cleared: Forgiveness is not approving of evil, excusing bad behavior, pretending hurt never happened, or canceling earthly consequences. It is not weakness, nor does it require an immediate apology from the offender.
  • A Heart Decision with God: Forgiveness is a deliberate, heart-level act of love, mercy, and grace. It is a decision between you and God to release bitterness rather than harbor resentment.
  • Protecting Your Walk with God: While our eternal salvation is secured by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9), holding onto unforgiveness damages our daily fellowship with God and hinders our spiritual growth (Matthew 6:14–15).

Standing Under the Canopy of Calvary

We are empowered to forgive others only when we realize how radically we have been forgiven by God.

  • From Rebels to Children: Apart from Christ, we stood exposed in an open field deserving God’s righteous judgment (Romans 6:23). Yet Jesus did not gloss over our sin; He paid for it in full with His own blood at Calvary.
  • Total Coverage: God canceled our legal debt, nailing it to the cross (Colossians 2:14), and removed our transgressions as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12).
  • Extending the Roof: Because we stand secure under the costly canopy of God’s grace, we can draw from Calvary to extend that same roof of forgiveness over our spouses, families, workplaces, and friendships.

Three Pillars of Extending Forgiveness

  • Forgiveness is Protection, Not Perfection: A roof doesn’t stop the rain outside; it protects the interior. Offenses will inevitably come, but forgiveness guards your heart and marriage from letting destructive elements inside (Colossians 3:13).
  • Forgiveness is Repetition, Not a Single Decision: When Peter asked if forgiving seven times was enough, Jesus responded with “seventy-seven times”—symbolizing limitless, ongoing forgiveness (Matthew 18:21–22). Putting “forgiveness on repeat” allows us to exercise Christlike character daily.
  • Forgiveness is Practice, Not a Product: True forgiveness does not wait for feelings of pain to vanish. It begins with intentional actions—praying for, blessing, and doing good to those who hurt us (Luke 6:27–28)—allowing our emotions to catch up over time.

Separating the Offense from the Offender

Deep emotional pain often makes us equate the sin with the person who committed it. Through the Holy Spirit, we must perform “spiritual surgery”—learning to hate the sin while continuing to love the sinner. Viewing offenders through the lens of redemption recognizes their broken humanity and opens the door for grace to heal what bitterness would destroy.

Inspect the roof of your heart and relationships in prayer: ask the Holy Spirit whether you are harboring a leak of bitterness or extending the canopy of Christ’s forgiveness over those who have hurt you.
