Who Do You Say I Am: The Question

2 February 2025Pastor Matroner George

The Importance of Questions

Questions are essential in guiding us through life’s complexities. They help us navigate relationships, make decisions, and seek clarity. Just as Jesus asked questions to provoke thought and reflection, we too should ask meaningful questions to deepen our understanding of ourselves and our relationship with God.

Jesus ‘ Questions vs. Ours

While we ask questions to gain information, Jesus asked questions to make us think critically. One of the most profound questions Jesus asked was, “Who do you say I am?” (Matthew 16:13-19). This question is pivotal, not just for historical context, but for our contemporary understanding of faith and identity.

In Matthew 16, Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” He then turns to them and asks, “But what about you—Who do you say I am?” (Matthew 16:13-15). This question is a cornerstone of Christian faith, inviting us to reflect on who Jesus is in our lives.

Simon Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, responds boldly, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus commends Peter, saying, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven” (Matthew 16:17).

Our Identity and Purpose

How we answer the question “Who do you say I am?” shapes our identity, purpose, and mission. It can either bring us joy, peace, and thriving or lead to anxiety and striving. Just as the disciples struggled to fully comprehend who Jesus was, many of us grapple with this question daily.

Jesus performed miracles, such as feeding the 5,000 and 4,000, to demonstrate his role as the “bread of life” (John 6:35). These miracles were not just physical acts but spiritual lessons. By providing for physical needs, Jesus was also showing his ability to provide for spiritual needs.

In Matthew 16:6-7, Jesus warns his disciples about the “yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” This metaphorical language encourages us to look beyond the physical and recognize the spiritual truths. Often, we get caught up in the physical aspects of life and miss the spiritual lessons God is trying to teach us.

Transformation and Revelation

Jesus’ question challenges us to examine our beliefs and transform our lives. True transformation comes from a personal relationship with Jesus, not just intellectual knowledge. As Paul writes in Colossians, Jesus is “the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy” (Colossians 1:18).

We must choose to know Jesus personally rather than relying solely on the opinions of others. The Holy Spirit reveals the truth about Jesus to us, and it is through this divine revelation that we can truly understand and embrace who Jesus is.

Our lives should reflect the truth of who Jesus is. If we claim to be followers of Jesus, our actions, relationships, and decisions should align with His teachings. We must continually seek to know Him more deeply and live in accordance with His will.

The question “Who do you say I am?” is the most important question we can ever answer. It defines our identity, purpose, and mission. As we continue to seek Jesus, let us be transformed by His grace and live out our faith authentically.

If you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus, know that He loves you and desires a relationship with you. Today is a new opportunity to seek Him and receive His transformative love.
