In one of Jesus’ final conversations with Peter, recorded in John 21:15-19, we find a profound teaching about what it truly means to follow Christ. After His resurrection, Jesus found Peter and some disciples who had returned to fishing – their old way of life. Through a powerful dialogue over breakfast on the shore, Jesus reinstated Peter and taught essential lessons about authentic discipleship.
The Context of the Conversation
The scene takes place after Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, when He had already appeared to His disciples twice. Peter, perhaps struggling with doubt or uncertainty, had returned to fishing – his occupation before Jesus called him. This mirrors our own tendencies to revert to old patterns during times of transition or uncertainty.
Understanding True Love and Commitment
In this conversation, Jesus asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Using the Greek word “agape” – representing unconditional, committed love – Jesus challenged Peter, who responded with “phileo” – representing affectionate, emotional love. This exchange reveals the depth of commitment Jesus seeks from His followers, beyond mere feelings or emotions.
Six Essential Requirements for Following Jesus
1. Change is Inevitable
Following Jesus always requires change. We cannot grow spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, or relationally without embracing change. While change may be uncomfortable, it’s essential for moving from futility to fruitfulness in our spiritual journey.
2. Deep Soul Searching
Our relationship with Jesus was never meant to be shallow. There will be seasons requiring intense self-examination and commitment evaluation. Like Peter being asked three times about his love for Jesus, we must regularly examine our dedication to following Christ.
3. Determined Focus
Maintaining focus on Jesus is crucial, especially during transitions. We must be careful about what voices we listen to and avoid comparisons that can divide and distract. Our attention must remain firmly fixed on Christ rather than circumstances or others’ opinions.
4. Authentic Humility
Following Jesus demands genuine humility. Understanding that it’s not about us but about His kingdom helps maintain proper perspective. True leadership in God’s kingdom always flows from a place of humility and service.
5. Selfless Submission
Partial submission isn’t submission at all. Following Jesus requires complete dedication – being “all in” rather than having one foot in and one foot out. This commitment must transcend our personal preferences and plans.
6. Untethered Obedience
Our obedience cannot be tied to emotions or comfort. It must be complete and unconditional, allowing us to stay in step with Christ’s leading regardless of circumstances or feelings.
The Challenge of Transition
Times of transition test these principles most strongly. Yet, when we maintain our focus on Jesus and trust His leadership, transitions become opportunities for growth rather than obstacles to overcome. The key is remembering that while we may not always understand God’s plan, we can trust His heart and purpose.
Following Jesus is both the greatest privilege and the greatest challenge we can embrace. While the path isn’t always easy, keeping these six principles in mind helps us navigate the journey faithfully. As we follow Christ, we must remember His words to Peter: “Follow me.” This simple yet profound command remains our primary calling, regardless of circumstances or seasons of change.
Remember, it’s not about perfect performance but faithful pursuit. Just as Jesus restored and reinstated Peter despite his failures, He continues to work in and through us as we commit to following Him wholeheartedly.
