The longing for peace is not merely a search for a concept or a political ceasefire, but a search for a person. Throughout history, God prepared the world—through the spread of the Greek language and the establishment of Roman road networks—to ensure the message of the Messiah could reach everyone. In God’s perfect timing, the “missing peace” arrived in the form of Jesus Christ. This sermon explores how the birth of a Savior transforms human terror into divine reverence and reconciles mankind to God.

From Terror to Reverence
When the shepherds encountered the glory of God, their immediate reaction was terror rather than joy. This response reveals a profound spiritual truth:
- The Exposure of Light: In the presence of a holy and just God, human sinfulness is exposed.
- The Fear of Punishment: Like Adam and Eve hiding in Eden, humanity naturally fears the judgment that sin deserves.
- Love Casts Out Fear: According to 1 John 4:18 , perfect love drives out fear. God’s love is demonstrated by the Creator entering His own creation in the lowest form—a manger—to offer a relationship instead of punishment.
The Three-Fold Identity of Peace
The angel’s announcement in Luke 2:11 identifies Jesus with three specific titles that address our deepest needs:
- Savior: Rescues us from the guilt and penalty of sin (death).
- Messiah: The “Anointed One” who fulfills God’s promises and provides hope.
- Lord: The Master who holds authority. Peace is only fully realized when Jesus moves from being a “spare tire” or “co-pilot” to occupying the driver’s seat of our lives.
The Broken Wall of Separation
The peace Jesus brought was not a temporary global ceasefire, but an eternal reconciliation.
- Ending Enmity: Jesus broke down the “middle wall of separation” that excluded Gentiles from the promises of Israel (Ephesians 2:14-16).
- A New Humanity: Through the cross, Jews and Gentiles are united into one body, reconciled to God.
- Favor Restored: God’s favor now rests on all who put their faith in Christ, regardless of bloodline.
Living in Peace Practically
True peace manifests in the daily life of a believer, even amidst chaos:
- Peace in Sanctification: Confidence that the Holy Spirit is tirelessly working to make us more like Christ (Philippians 1:6).
- Peace in Chaos: Knowing that God is a helper and that “mere mortals” cannot thwart His purpose.
- Peace in Purpose: Understanding that “all things work together for good” (Romans 8:28) specifically means being conformed to the image of Jesus, regardless of earthly circumstances.
