The closer a believer walks with God, the more they become a target for the kingdom of darkness. In the sermon “It Is Written,” the congregation is reminded that spiritual growth often invites spiritual attack. However, Jesus provided the ultimate blueprint for victory in the wilderness. When faced with the devil’s schemes, Jesus did not rely on His own arguments or physical strength; instead, He wielded the Word of God as His primary weapon, repeatedly declaring, “It is written.”
Temptation often strikes at our point of greatest weakness—physical, emotional, or mental. The sermon identifies three specific areas where the enemy attacks:
- The Temptation of Appetite: Satisfying eternal needs with temporary things.
- The Temptation of Trust: Testing God’s character rather than trusting His promises.
- The Temptation of Power: Seeking shortcuts to authority through idolatry and compromise.
In every instance, Jesus countered the enemy’s distortions with the truth of Scripture. Even when Satan attempted to misquote Psalm 91 to encourage a foolish test of God’s protection, Jesus used the “Sword of the Spirit” to restore the correct biblical context. The sermon emphasizes that while God allows us to be tried to create perseverance, He always provides a way out through His Word.
Ultimately, the goal for the believer is to transition from being a casual reader to a student of the Word. By hiding Scripture in our hearts, we arm ourselves with the only offensive weapon in the Armor of God—a weapon that is “alive and active” and “sharper than any double-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). While we may fail and give in to temptation, we serve a High Priest who was tempted in every way yet remained without sin. Through His perfect record, we find both the strength to resist and the grace to be restored.
