Many of us get uncomfortable the moment “speaking in tongues” comes up. There’s a lot of misinformation out there — and according to Pastor Matty, that’s exactly what the enemy wants. In this message from “The Spirit Has Come,” we go straight to Scripture to clear away the fear.
The Gift Is For Today
Some teach that tongues ceased when the last apostle died, using 1 Corinthians 13:8-10. But “completeness” there points to the return of Christ and the new heaven and new earth — not the death of the disciples. Mark 16:15-17 ties tongues to the same Great Commission still in effect today; we cannot keep salvation and discard tongues.
The Gift Is For All
Acts 2:38-39 says the promise is “for you and your children and for all who are far off” — that’s us. It’s not reserved for a spiritual elite; it comes by grace, not by how spiritual you are. 1 Corinthians 12 addresses one specific public expression, not the gift as a whole. At Pentecost, ALL of them were filled and ALL spoke.
The Gift Varies in Expression
The Proof Tongue (Acts 2) — known languages that reach unbelievers and lead them to the gospel. The Prayer Tongue (1 Cor 14:1-4) — a heavenly language between you and God alone, that edifies you. The Prophetic Tongue (1 Cor 14:26-28) — a message for the church that requires interpretation. Paul wasn’t against tongues; he was correcting pride and disorder in Corinth.
Your Response
Hunger for the Holy Spirit (not just the gift). Ask boldly for the baptism of the Spirit. Receive expectantly — open your mouth, because the Holy Spirit is a gentleman and won’t force it.
