The Commitment Foundation

6 September 2026Brick by Brick · 1 of 5

In the beachfront city of Santos, Brazil, several luxurious high-rise apartment buildings constructed in the 1950s and 60s began tilting dangerously forward, left, and right. Developers had anchored the buildings on a shallow 23-foot bed of sand without digging down to unmovable bedrock, unaware of the soft, watery clay directly beneath. Over time, the heavy weight squeezed the water out of the clay, causing the sand layer to sink unevenly. In our relationships, human emotions and feelings act as that shifting sand; when we anchor permanent covenants in temporary feelings, our connections inevitably tilt and crack under pressure.

1

The Shifting Sand of Feelings vs. Bedrock

Human emotions are a terrible foundation for long-term relationships because feelings constantly fluctuate. Many people enter marriages or friendships based purely on chemistry or how someone makes them feel, forgetting that marriage was designed for God’s kingdom rather than personal self-fulfillment. When we dig past emotional sand and anchor our relationships on the unmovable bedrock of Jesus Christ, our connections can withstand life’s heavy pressures without crumbling.

2

Vertical Commitment: Dedicated to God First

Healthy, Christ-centered relationships are never an accident—they must be intentionally built on a solid vertical commitment to God. Having a true relationship with God requires more than a past salvation experience; it demands daily prayer, studying His Word, and practicing active obedience regardless of how we feel. Vertical fellowship with God is the non-negotiable source of all genuine love.

3

Loving God with Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind

In Luke 10:27, Jesus highlights the primary commandment: to love God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind. Loving God with our mind means studying Scripture and examining historical truth rather than following a blind faith. Furthermore, no human being was ever designed to carry the weight of another person’s soul; expecting a spouse or friend to be our ultimate source of joy or satisfaction puts the weight of a skyscraper on a bed of sand.

4

Horizontal Commitment: Devoted to One Another

Once our vertical foundation is secure, we are called to commit horizontally to one another by dying to self and honoring others above ourselves. As believers united by the blood of Jesus, we belong to one spiritual family. Like Ruth’s covenant commitment to Naomi—promising to stay, go, and serve together through every hardship—true horizontal commitment means choosing to stay, serve, and do what is best for others regardless of personal cost.

Key Scripture References

  • Philippians 2:1–2 — ” Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ… make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.”
  • Luke 10:27 — ” Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.”
  • Galatians 2:20 — ” I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”
  • Romans 12:10 — ” Be devoted to one another in love.Honor one another above yourselves. “
  • Ruth 1:16–17 — ” Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.”

As you reflect, audit your relationship foundation in prayer: ask the Holy Spirit whether you are relying on emotional sand or anchoring in Jesus as your unmovable bedrock.
