The Foundation of Boldness
True boldness is not a personality trait but a direct result of the New Covenant hope. Under this covenant, God does not simply command obedience through laws written on stone; instead, the Holy Spirit writes His laws directly onto human hearts. This divine work provides the competence and power to live for God, shifting the source of confidence from personal ability to the indwelling Spirit. Because this ministry brings life and righteousness that far surpasses the Old Covenant, believers can live as “letters from Christ” read by everyone.
Defining Holy Audacity
Boldness is acting fearlessly by the power of the Holy Spirit on an urgent conviction, even in the presence of danger. This “holy audacity” requires choosing the Spirit over the comforts of the flesh. It manifests in three specific ways:
- Courage over Fear: Daring to act and speak even when facing strong opposition or mistreatment.
- Courage over Shame: Refusing to be ashamed of the Gospel and choosing to exalt Christ in the body, whether by life or by death.
- Courage over Vagueness: Speaking the truth plainly and with clarity. It rejects euphemisms or generalities used to protect a reputation, opting instead to call out sin and salvation straightforwardly.
Living with Confidence
This boldness empowers believers to approach God’s throne with freedom, proclaim the Gospel without the need for formal theological schooling, and live righteously in a fallen world. Because God’s power is absolute—reigning over the subatomic, the celestial, and the spiritual realms—there is no rival authority that can diminish His sovereignty. When the realization takes hold that the Almighty God is for His children, timidity is replaced by a commitment to move boldly and honor the urgency of the Gospel.
