How to Walk by the Spirit (and Stop Fighting Your Flesh Alone) | Galatians 5

8 June 2026

If you’ve ever tried to stop a bad habit, break a sin cycle, or just live better — and found yourself right back where you started — you’re not alone. And according to Apostle Paul in Galatians 5, the problem probably isn’t effort. It’s strategy.

The Conflict of Two Natures (Galatians 5:16–18)

Every believer lives with an inner war. The flesh pulls toward sin; the Spirit pulls toward God. This isn’t a sign you’re failing — it’s a sign you’re alive in Christ. Paul says the Spirit has been given to help us navigate this conflict, not eliminate it. You will never ‘reach a point’ where the flesh stops wanting what it wants. But you can choose who leads.

The Contrast of Two Lifestyles (Galatians 5:19–23)

The way you live reveals who you’re following. The works of the flesh (sexual immorality, hatred, envy, drunkenness — and more) are the fruits of a life governed by self. But the fruit of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control — reflects the character of Jesus taking root in you. Walking by the Spirit is not just about what you stop doing. It’s about what starts growing.

The Commitment to Keep in Step (Galatians 5:24–25)

Paul says those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh. Not the Spirit crucified it — you did. Crucifying your flesh is a daily decision, not a one-time event. Every morning you wake up, you’re choosing again. And Paul gives us three practical rhythms to help: Alignment (morning surrender to the Spirit), Surrender (the conscious breath when temptation hits), and Obedience (actively following the Spirit’s nudges, not just avoiding sin).

Key Scriptures

  • Galatians 5:16 — ‘Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.’ (NIV)
  • Galatians 5:22–23 — The fruit of the Spirit (NIV)
  • Romans 8:1–2 — No condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (NIV)
  • John 15:5 — ‘Apart from me you can do nothing.’ (NIV)

Which of the three rhythms — alignment, surrender, or obedience — do you need to practice most right now? Watch the full message to go deeper.
