How the Cross Defines Your Identity (And Why Nothing Else Can)

2 June 2026

Before you ever had the language to ask “Who am I?” — the cross already had an answer. This Family Experience Sunday, the youth of The Ocean Church took the stage to unpack one of the most urgent questions of our generation: what actually defines us?

Not our failures. Not our past. Not the labels people hand us. Here are four truths that change everything.

The Cross Defines Me (Romans 5:8)

God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He saw us at our absolute worst — fully aware of every mistake we would ever make — and still chose the cross. When he died, our old identity rooted in shame, fear, and insecurity was nailed there with him. When he rose again, he offered not just a clean slate but a completely new identity. The cross of Jesus Christ stands as an eternal declaration: your identity is not self-made. It is God-given.

My New Christ-Like Nature (2 Corinthians 5:17, 5:21)

If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. Not a better version of the old you — something entirely new. Jesus uses the image of a tree: a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. For generations we have tried to fix the fruit — better habits, cleaner speech, more discipline — while the tree stayed the same. But Jesus is not in the business of behaviour modification. He is in the business of nature restoration. He changes the tree.

The Lies I Believed (Romans 6:11, Ephesians 1:5)

Even after the cross has spoken, there are voices that try to define us — voices that replay our failures and remind us of every moment we fell short. The danger is not just hearing those lies. The danger is believing them. Belief is so powerful it is the exact requirement for salvation — so what does belief in the lies give us? Count yourself dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. You are not a former bad tree waiting to be rejected. You are adopted — permanently, legally, irrevocably — into the family of God.

Living Like It ‘s True (Romans 12:1)

Now what? Now we live like it’s true. Not to earn God’s love, but because his love has already been poured out. Not to prove something to the world, but because something deep inside has genuinely changed. Romans 12:1 calls us to offer our whole lives as a living sacrifice — and calls it our “reasonable service.” Not an extreme act reserved for super-Christians. The most logical, natural response to the mercy we’ve already received.

You are no longer who you used to be. The old is gone. From this day forward, let your actions reflect your new nature — not just on Sundays, but at home, at school, in the dark places where nobody is watching. That is not performance. That is transformation.
