Three weeks. That’s all it took. The Israelites obeyed God, went up the mountain, started cutting timber — and then stopped. In Haggai 2, Sam Kilewo shows us that discouragement isn’t a sign that you’re doing something wrong. Sometimes it’s a sign you’re doing exactly the right thing.
- The Problem — Discouragement from Within
Two forces were at work: nostalgia and overwhelm. Older Jews who had seen Solomon’s glorious temple wept at the modest new foundation — and their weeping spread like infection. Meanwhile, the whole community was overwhelmed by an impossible-looking task with no generational wealth, no king, and no guarantee of safety.
- God ‘s Response — Divine Encouragement
God didn’t condemn. He commanded — with four declarations that are just as relevant for us today: Be strong. Work. I am with you. Do not fear. He backed this with a covenant reminder from Exodus: the God who parted the Red Sea is the same God backing this project.
- The Promise — Greater Glory to Come
God promised that the glory of the new house would exceed the old — not because of its architecture, but because Jesus would walk through it. And when we believe in Christ, we become that dwelling place. The latter glory isn’t a building. It’s us, indwelt by the Spirit.
