They Shouted ‘Hosanna’ — But Did They Know What It Meant?

29 March 2026

On the first Palm Sunday, something extraordinary happened: a King rode into the city — and the crowd got His identity exactly right, but His mission completely wrong. This tension is at the heart of Josephine’s powerful Palm Sunday message from The Ocean Church, drawn from Matthew 21:1–11.

1

Jesus Was Welcomed as King

The crowd’s response to Jesus’ entry was royal: cloaks on the road, palm branches waved, and the declaration ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ These weren’t random gestures — they were signs of submission and honor reserved for royalty. The people believed Jesus was the Messiah, the promised heir of David’s throne. And they were right.

But Jesus didn’t arrive on a warhorse like a conquering general. He came on a donkey — a symbol of peace, gentleness, and humility, fulfilling the ancient prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. He was the Prince of Peace, not a political revolutionary. The crowd saw a king; they just didn’t yet understand the kind of King He was.

Challenge: We can say ‘Jesus is King’ with our mouths. But do we let Him rule our lives?

The Cry of ‘Hosanna’ Reveals a Deeper Need

‘Hosanna’ isn’t just a word of praise — it’s a Hebrew cry for help. Literally: ‘Save us now.’ The crowd was crying out, but their expectation was political: freedom from Rome, national restoration, power. Jesus had something far more profound in mind. He didn’t come to overthrow Caesar. He came to overthrow sin and death.

Our prayers can drift the same way: Lord fix my job, fix my relationship, fix my finances. These desires aren’t wrong — but they’re not our deepest need. Our greatest need is reconciliation with God, forgiveness of sin, and new life. True faith isn’t just about receiving help. It’s about receiving Him.

The King They Celebrated Was the Savior They Missed

As the crowd cheered, Jesus wept (Luke 19:41). He could see what they couldn’t: in just days, these same voices would shout ‘Crucify Him.’ Why the shift? Because Jesus didn’t deliver on their terms. Real discipleship means accepting not just His blessings, but His ways — even when they don’t match our expectations.
