We’ve been exploring how God uses Old Testament history to foreshadow the redemptive work of Jesus. Think of these stories like emojis: physical pictures that convey a message, but are always inferior to the reality. Today, we see God’s marvelous sovereignty in the Book of Esther, showing us how Jesus is the true, superior Esther.
Jesus is the Superior Esther
When we connect Esther’s narrative to Jesus, the story takes on a whole new depth:
- A People Under Death Sentence: In Esther, Haman plotted a decree to annihilate all the Jews. Similarly, humanity is under a spiritual death sentence because “all have sinned” and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 3:23, 6:23).
- A People In Need of a Mediator: The Jews couldn’t enter the king’s inner court unsummoned; they needed someone with access. Esther was the perfect mediator because she stood in both camps: she was a Jew and the Queen. Similarly, Jesus is our perfect mediator because He is fully God and fully man. As 1 Timothy 2:5 says, there is one mediator between God and mankind, Christ Jesus.
- A People Redeemed by an Offered Life: Esther called for a three-day fast. On the third day , she entered the king’s inner court, staring death down to plead for her people’s lives. But Jesus is the superior Esther: while Esther risked her life, Jesus willingly gave His life as a ransom for all people.
When Esther hesitated, Mordecai reminded her she was placed in her royal position ” for such a time as this”. Ocean Church, nothing is random with God. You are appointed, ordained, and anointed to be exactly where you are today for such a time as this.
If you are still breathing, you have a purpose for the Kingdom—are you walking in alignment with your assignment?
